I'd like to add to that. I think virtuosity is actually a hindrance to making truly great music. virtuosity doesn't make a song better.

The thing is: In pop music you do not have to be a virtuoso to be great. One thing I can say about the Beatles, Lennon-McCartney are the greatest songwriters of the last 60 years. The amount of great songs they wrote is unbelievable. Most people do not give enough credit to George Martin. I think they were very simple when they first came out. When you see were they went in 2-3 years from 1962-63 to 1965-66, it's astounding.

my point exactly, alot of people are like sheep, they just follow the herd.seperate the lyrics from the music and you'll hear that they are very simple musicians, nothing special at all.add that to most of their songs are simple repeating lyrics.why the hype???not denying they sold loads but thats why they are in lists.'its cool to like the beatles'.in my view,ABBA had more actual musical talent, break their songs down and listen.

Wow! To each his own, I guess. But, they are probably the most respected rock band ever. If you ask anybody outside the rock genre (jazz, classical, country or world music) to name their top 10 ten rock bands / performers, I bet the Beatles would make most lists. Respected musicians like Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny would agree. How crap would you have to be to have the most performed pop song ever in 'Yesterday". I guess they fooled a lot of stupid people.
